Farewell, Penny! — A Memorial Writing & History Activity (Grades 3–5)
Farewell, Penny! is a thoughtful, creative ELA and social studies activity that invites students to explore the history, symbolism, and fading role of the U.S. penny through writing, reflection, and discussion.
Students examine why the penny is being phased out, learn about its historical designs and cultural meaning, and then write a symbolic farewell using personification and evidence-based reasoning. The lesson can be completed as a writing activity alone or expanded into a mock memorial experience with optional presentations and reflection.
