Would You Survive a Horror Movie? | Halloween ELA Activity & Horror Tropes
Would You Survive a Horror Movie? | Halloween ELA Activity & Horror Tropes
Would your students survive a horror movie, or would they be the first ones out?
Put students' horror-movie instincts to the test with this spooky, scenario-based quiz that combines suspense, humor, decision-making, and literary analysis. Students navigate 12 classic horror-movie situations, choose what they would really do, calculate their survival scores, and discover the horror tropes behind their decisions.
But the fun doesn't stop with the quiz! After students reveal their results, they'll explore why horror movies reward certain choices, punish others, and rely on familiar patterns to keep audiences watching.
Designed for middle and high school ELA, this activity offers an engaging way to introduce or reinforce horror tropes, audience expectations, suspense, and Gothic literary conventions.

HOW TO USE THIS RESOURCE
Begin by distributing the quiz and score sheet without revealing the trope explanations. Give students approximately 15 minutes to complete the quiz and calculate their results. Then distribute the Trope Reveal page and invite students to compare their choices with the genre's survival rules.
Use the extension activities for a deeper discussion, a writing assignment, a Halloween lesson, or an additional ELA activity.
GRADE LEVELS: Grades 6–12, with separate extension challenges for middle school and high school.
PREPARATION: Print and go.
CONTENT NOTE: The scenarios are spooky, suspenseful, and intended for a PG-13-style horror atmosphere without graphic gore. Two scenarios include a bloodstained cleaver and bones in a furnace. Teacher notes identify these scenarios as easy swaps for younger or more sensitive students.
Give your students a chance to test their instincts, uncover the rules of the horror genre, and decide
whether they have what it takes to survive the final act!
