🏕️🔪 Would YOU Survive Crystal Lake? A Friday the 13th Survival Quiz

The storm is rolling in. The phones have no signal. The camp van won't start. And somewhere near the lake, a figure in a hockey mask is waiting.

Welcome to Camp Crystal Lake! In this suspenseful, horror-inspired classroom activity, students become summer camp counselors facing 12 classic slasher-movie scenarios. Every decision matters. Will they make it to sunrise, or will they become another cautionary tale?

This isn't just a survival quiz! Students will also explore the storytelling conventions that make slasher films so memorable, from the campfire legend and the isolated setting to the Final Girl and the dreaded "I'll Be Right Back" moment.

🎬 What's Included?

  • 12-Question Survival Quiz: Students respond to suspenseful, scenario-based questions and make choices that could determine their fate.
  • Scoring Guide: Students calculate their scores and discover whether they're the Final Survivor, make it to the Final Act, are Gone by the Midpoint, or don't survive the first campfire.
  • The Slasher Rulebook: A breakdown of 12 horror conventions, including isolation, dead phones, ignored evidence, the obvious hiding spot, and the final showdown.
  • Film Studies Vocabulary: Introduces concepts such as the Final Girl, dramatic irony, foreshadowing, and subversion.
  • Analysis and Writing Challenges: Six extension activities invite students to analyze horror protagonists, write campfire legends, explore genre conventions, build suspense, and compare storytelling techniques.
  • Optional Discussion Prompt: Encourages students to consider how slasher films portray character behavior, survival, and who deserves to make it to the end.
  • Teacher Notes: Includes suggested timing and ideas for introducing the analysis component.

👻 Perfect For:

  • High school English Language Arts (Grades 9–12)
  • Film studies and genre analysis
  • Horror and suspense units
  • Literary devices and storytelling conventions
  • Halloween activities and Friday the 13th lessons
  • Creative writing and narrative structure
  • Engaging classroom discussions about genre expectations

📝 How to Use It

Start with the survival quiz and let students compare their choices. Before revealing the Slasher Rulebook, challenge them to identify patterns in the decisions that earn the most points. Then use the rulebook to explore how horror movies establish expectations, build suspense, and sometimes subvert familiar tropes.

The extension activities can be used for independent writing, partner discussions, stations, homework, or a short film studies mini-unit.

Why You’ll Will Love It

This resource combines a playful survival challenge with meaningful ELA analysis. Students get to make choices, discover familiar horror tropes, and investigate how storytellers use setting, foreshadowing, suspense, and character decisions to shape an audience's expectations.

The content focuses on suspense and implied threats rather than graphic violence, making it a useful option for exploring horror conventions in an academic setting.

Bring a little Friday the 13th suspense into your classroom! Can your students make it to sunrise at Crystal Lake?
