Rules may be broken, but expectations are meant to be met.

Start the school year by building a classroom community based on mutual respect and shared expectations. This simple yet meaningful activity encourages students to reflect on what helps everyone learn and succeed.

The Pie Chart Includes Three Sections:

  • What You Need from Your Teacher
  • What You Need from Your Fellow Students
  • What Your Teacher Needs from You

Before distributing the activity, complete the "What Your Teacher Needs from You" section with your own non-negotiable classroom expectations. Leave the other two sections blank so students can share their ideas and perspectives.

Extend the Discussion

One of the most valuable conversations centers around how students want to be redirected when they are off task or making an inappropriate choice. Encourage students to think about respectful ways they would like a teacher to handle these situations.

Some examples include:

  • A quiet tap on the desk
  • Speaking privately in the hallway
  • Kneeling beside the desk for a quiet conversation
  • Using preferred names or nicknames
  • Other respectful approaches students suggest

Collaborative Option

After students complete their individual pie charts, have them work with a partner or small group to compare responses. Each group can identify common themes before the class works together to create one Master Classroom Expectations Pie Chart that represents the values and expectations of your classroom community.

This activity is an excellent first-week-of-school resource for establishing trust, promoting student voice, and creating shared ownership of classroom expectations.
