The Fierce Yellow Pumpkin | Read-Aloud Companion & Activities | K–1
Turn your Kindergarten and 1st Grade students into Fierce Field Agents with this engaging read-aloud companion for The Fierce Yellow Pumpkin! Students will complete missions at Scarecrow’s Academy while practicing reading comprehension, vocabulary, sequencing, math, science, writing, and social-emotional skills.
Designed specifically for K–1 learners, this resource takes the story beyond a simple read-aloud with hands-on activities that encourage students to think, talk, investigate, create, and connect the story to their own experiences.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
Word Detective Cards
Students explore important story vocabulary, including fierce, scarecrow, blackbirds, frost, stem, hollowed, zigzag, and candle. Students find each word in the story, learn its meaning, write a sentence, and draw a picture.
Story Order Mission
Cut and sequence six story cards to retell the major events in order.
Story Check
Answer comprehension questions about key story details and explain how the pumpkin changes throughout the story. Students also make a personal connection by identifying something that makes them feel fierce, meaning brave and strong.
Glow-Up Pumpkin Craftivity
Create a pull-tab pumpkin that grows from little and green to fierce and glowing.
Fierce Voice Dial + Voice Log
Explore expressive reading by changing voice volume and tone. Students can experiment with whispering, storytelling, growling, and roaring.

Pumpkin Math Missions
Practice addition and subtraction within 10 using story-based problems, then measure a real pumpkin or pumpkin picture using yarn, linking cubes, or a ruler.
Fierce Isn't Mean
Sort behaviors into fierce (brave and strong) or mean (unkind) and discuss what it really means to be fierce. Students also reflect on when they feel fierce.
Design-a-Face Lab
Choose a mood, plan a pumpkin face using shapes, and describe the finished pumpkin.
Word Play: Little-Little-Little Pumpkin Poem
Students experiment with describing words and create their own bouncy pumpkin poem.
Mouse's-Eye View
Step into the story from a field mouse's perspective and imagine seeing a glowing pumpkin face in the dark. Students describe how they would feel and what they might do.
